Roy Smith did not grow up in contingent workforce management, but he’s on a mission to expand Ecolab’s program across the globe.

Through most of his 27-year career with Ecolab, Smith worked in sales or business management in various divisions. Three years ago, he joined the contingent talent solutions team, assuming responsibility for the program’s implementation in Europe. His hard work earned him a promotion — he was appointed director, global contingent workforce solutions in July.

The global program focused on staff augmentation upon its rollout. Independent contractor management has been added in the US and is being prepared for Europe. Now it aims to implement statement of work in the US.

In the last two years, the program has expanded to over 15 new countries, largely based in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Ecolab has developed what it calls a small-market solution, which provides affordable technology and utilizes local HR support to meet the requirements for those new countries. The program has also been able to track safety risks and use bill rate data to generate approximate total labor cost for businesses.

“In our small-market expansion countries, we’ve quickly found that with the visibility we’ve brought around workforce and total labor cost, our managers are now more confident in their labor strategies, and we’ve become a growth enabler,” Smith says, adding that this rollout has generated interest to put in place similar initiatives in other countries around the world.
