As the director of procurement at Humana, Bryan Miller leads the Human Capital category management team and Humana’s contingent labor program within it. This program sources for a diverse selection of enterprise roles, from light industrial to customer care to IT development, with 10 suppliers classified as Tier 1.

Miller assumed his role in 2018, taking the reins on a program he describes as “scrappy” — not built by company mandate, but rather by selling the value proposition internally with a “boots on the ground” approach. “It’s been a story of taking strong strategic sourcing and program management principles and applying them in this contingent labor arena,” Miller says.

In the past year, Miller successfully expanded the program to five times its size, incorporating contingent workers from multiple lines of business that had previously been managed directly with agencies. This achievement, Miller explains, has paid off via significant cost savings, increased speed-to-market, and it ultimately allows each business team to focus on their core competency.

Going forward, Miller’s sights are set on creating a “boundaryless” workforce for Humana through flexible sourcing channels, a diverse supply base, and upgrading technology. When it comes to the CW space as a whole, Miller believes the key is staying nimble: being willing to challenge traditional ways of working, particularly as the war for talent continues to escalate.
